On Volunteering to be a Band Booster
Dear Parents,
As it comes time to begin this year, we’re becoming increasingly aware of how busy people are these days. Our lives are so completely filled with “to do” list items, meetings, “prior commitments,” appointments, engagements, events, etc. that we sometimes forget to be glad we woke up, much less worry about involving ourselves in more.
I would like to encourage you to do two things:
1. Always be glad you woke up. Not everybody does. As they say, “Every day is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.” J Live like you’re glad you woke up.
2. Take time to support your son/daughters’ efforts in this band program by being present and active.
If I could offer you an opportunity that teaches your child self-discipline, develops self-esteem, encourages team building and cooperation, is a positive influence in a very dangerous world, AND gives you a chance to be part of his/her efforts in a very real way—allowing you as parents to share in something that your kids are interested in and spend a great deal of time working on, you’d say “sign me up!” Well, that’s what I’m offering you. The band boosters are the backbone of the support system for these kids, and we need YOU—all of you--to make this year incredible for these students.
It’s easy to say “I’ll help, but I don’t want to commit to being in charge,” or “I just have too much going on,” or “it’s just too much trouble.” In all that we do, most things are too much trouble for most people.
Don’t believe for one minute that you will find a more rewarding way to be involved in your son/daughters’ high school years than through this activity. I have spent my life in this activity because I believe in the capacity these experiences have to change young people and make their lives full of times better remembered than forgotten. Remember, “It’s not about how many breaths you take, but how many moments take your breath away.”
The first booster meeting is August 7th in the band room at 7pm. Do NOT let this opportunity pass by. Don’t have something else to do. Don’t have too many other commitments. Walk in the door, say you’re glad you woke up, and ask how you can help. Take some responsibility. Be a part. Make a difference. Be a Band Booster.
Sincerely,
Leslie Gilreath
